Established in 1976 to provide counseling on contraception and unintended pregnancy, SHILO is committed to raising the public's awareness about reproductive health issues and to preserving women's reproductive rights. SHILO's goals are to encourage responsible healthy sexual behavior as well as to assist women and young girls facing an unplanned pregnancy, including referral to legal abortion.
SHILO's service integrates community outreach and educational programs, individual counseling and contraceptive clinic.
Programs that make a difference:

Sex education workshops are conducted in junior high
and secondary schools and with 'marginal' youth, immigrants from
the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia and with Arab youth.

Training workshops in sexual health education are conducted with
professionals such as teachers, guidance counselors, nurses and social workers.
More then 1,000 women and young girls are counseled annually at SHILO's drop-in center on emergency contraception, birth control and unintended pregnancy.

Pre and post abortion counseling is also provided.

Public education media campaigns on the availability and accessibility of emergency contraception are initiated.
Both the counseling and clinical services rely on volunteer professionals - social workers, educational counselors and gynecologists. A full-time Director and several group workers, including Arabic and Russian speakers, implement the educational programs. A volunteer professional Board oversees SHILO's projects and financial management.
In Israel's pro-natal traditional climate, family planning in general and abortion specifically are very sensitive issues. Receiving little or no funding from government or municipal sources, SHILO is supported by private foundations and caring individuals.
